Beauty and the Beast smashes box office records
Disney’s biggest live-action remake to date broke a handful of global records this weekend
Disney’s live action remake of Beauty and the Beast has set a string of new box office records after releasing in cinemas this weekend to become the biggest ever PG movie opening, both internationally and in its domestic US market.
The movie made a whopping $170 million at the US box office, and $180m globally, to take the crown from Disney-Pixar’s Finding Dory.
With Disney’s live-action remakes continuing to draw huge crowds, Beauty and the Beast takes up the trend as its biggest yet, topping Alice in Wonderland which took $116.1 million on its debut.
With Emma Watson in the starring role as Belle, Beauty and the Beast has also made history as the biggest opener for a female lead. It was the biggest opening since last year’s Marvel Studios hit Captain America: Civil War.
