Retail Week unveils top online retailers
Multichannel retailers dominate Retail Week’s Top 20 chart
Though Amazon stands head and shoulders above its closest competition, a new list of the Top 20 biggest online retailers in the UK is dominated by the nation’s multichannel retailers.
Compiled by Retail Week, the chart shows Tesco, Argos, John Lewis and Dixons Carphone fill out the top five positions. Shop Direct, the biggest pure-play online retailer other than Amazon comes in at number six, while Next, Sainsbury’s, Asda and Ocado round out the top 10.
From the full list of 20, 75 per cent strike the balance between online and bricks and mortar retailing. The most successful retailers are those that offer flexibility to consumers, with click and collect, same-day delivery and other services helping to entice time-poor shoppers.
Estimated turnover for Amazon.co.uk hit £4,900m in online revenues for 2015/16. Tesco’s estimated online earnings hit £3,100m in the same period, while Argos made a healthy £2,017m and John Lewis brought in £1,716m worth of dotcom business.
The ranking tracks ecommerce earnings before a number of pivotal investments and mergers, for instance Sainsbury’s acquisition of Argos, and Tesco and John Lewis’ bids to offer consumers more convenient, richer online shopping experiences.
