Netflix acquires comic book publisher Millarworld
Streaming giant's first purchase is comic publisher behind Kingsman and Wanted franchises
Netflix has made its first acquisition with the purchase of comic book publisher Millarworld for an undisclosed amount.
It is the first move the US video-on-demand giant has made into other forms of media, although Millarworld's rich portfolio of IP seems to be the key reason behind the purchase. The comic company is behind some of the most successful comic-movie adaptations of the past decade, including Wanted, Kingsman and Kick-Ass, which combined grossed $1bn at the box office.
Netflix said it intends to turn the comic publisher's characters and worlds into TV, movies and children's shows.
Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s Chief Content Officer, said: “We look forward to creating new Netflix originals from several existing franchises as well as new super-hero, anti-hero, fantasy, sci-fi and horror stories Mark and his team will continue to create and publish.”
