Pixar’s Cars 2 reaches $68 million in opening weekend

Cars 2 is now set to overhaul Cars' $200 million for the film alone, with merchandising expected to take it into billions.

The $68 million was not as high as initially forecast, with only 40 per cent of its weekend numbers attributed to 3D theatres, exposing parents intentions to bypass 3-D and stick with traditional 2-D.

Cars 2 managed to fend off new releases Bad Teacher and The Green Lantern to reach the number one spot.
